Online shopping sees rise over holidays, especially for small merchants

As millions of consumers flocked to the internet this holiday season to avoid bad weather, crowded car parks and shopping mall frenzies, many popular ecommerce portals saw a major boost in traffic.

According to a recent report by comScore, online retailers were expected to see an overall traffic increase of 11 percent over the holidays compared to last year's figures. Indeed, ecommerce set records this holiday season - but much of that increase went to smaller etailers, as many larger companies actually saw their traffic decline.

Amazon.com, the largest online retailer in the world, saw a 6 percent rise in traffic, but others weren't so lucky. Best Buy's number of unique visitors slipped 1 percent in December, while Target's fell by 11 percent.

Shoppers may be choosing smaller etailers for a number of reasons - better prices, a desire to support local merchants, the availability of unique products or cheaper shipping, to name a few possibilities. Whatever the reason, the time is ripe for small businesses to get into the ecommerce game.
