Morrisons to launch ecommerce portal in 2011

Wm Morrisons, the fourth-largest supermarket chain in the U.K., has plans to kick off an ecommerce expansion throughout 2011 - and it needs a qualified developer to help it achieve this goal.

As online shopping continues to explode in popularity throughout the U.K., Brits are heading to the web to grab everything from apparel to electronics. Now, grocery stores are realising that they can save Brits a long car ride and a horrendous parking experience by allowing people to shop for the groceries over the internet.

Morrisons is late to the ecommerce game. Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda have already launched successful online portals, and have therefore overtaken Morrisons in online service. Alternative grocery delivery services, such as Ocado, present yet another threat to the chain's traditional brick-and-mortar outlook. In order to stay competitive, Morrisons has accepted that it will need to move into the online space.

The company is expected to establish its online presence in early 2011, with a trial system scheduled to launch in the first or second quarter. It has yet to select a developer, but digital agency Candi London will continue to manage Morrisons' digital brand advertising, while DLKW Lowe, the incumbent on its advertising business, and MEC, its media agency, will also remain unaffected.

Meanwhile, the latest figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index reached a record high in late 2010. Online sales in 2010 were up by 7 percent over November 2009 and by 25 percent over December 2009.
