A contactless payment system was rolled out by Orange earlier this week, providing U.K. consumers with the ability to pay for goods by simply waving a specially equipped credit card near a reader.
The cards, dubbed Orange Cash by the company, can be pre-paid for up to £5,000 and are only available for transactions totalling less than £15, according to a report from Computer Weekly. The publication adds that they can be recharged with funds at some petrol stations, shops, and post offices.
Orange vice president of propositions, Pippa Dunn, told the publication the service had an online component, as well.
"After registering their card, customers can access the main features of their Orange Cash account from their mobile to keep up to date on any transactions," she said.
The Register, a tech news website, asserted that the Orange Cash program was a forerunner of the product that payment services companies really have their eyes on - a way to allow people to pay for purchases simply by using their mobile.
