In a recent PayPal-sponsored survey conducted by AC Nielsen on the buying habits of Singapore's online shoppers, results showed that the unavailability of certain products, as well as a greater variety of items, spearheaded the motivation for internet purchases, according to CNET.

The survey also found that there was significant resistance to the adoption of mobile payments through items like the iPhone. Of the 40 percent of online purchases made by Singapore citizens, only 4 percent were made through mobile devices, notes the news source.

Top barriers included small screens, security concerns and slow mobile internet connections.

However, startup mobile coupons company A Good Life provides Singapore retailers with a way to track consumer behaviour with its mobile app, Glo, according to ZDNet.

According to the news source, the app publishes a listing of discount vouchers offered by retailers, which users can save for use when they frequent a merchant.

Additionally, the app's developers have instituted an element of security through its payment gateway. Participating retailers will receive a hardware token to generate one-time passwords (OTP), which they will use to authenticate customer redemptions. The technology is particularly useful to prevent accidental or purposeful fraud.
