In a recent interview with TechRadar, Stephen Bates, managing director of Research In Motion's U.K. branch, claimed his company's new BlackBerry Bold smartphone will give a significant boost to mobile payments in the U.K.
Mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablet computers, are increasingly being used for commerce in a variety of ways. Many customers are using them for ecommerce purposes, making purchases online through online payment gateways.
In some places, users are now able to use their mobile phones to purchase items in stores, using near-field communications technology.
According to Bates, the new BlackBerry handset will make mcommerce and contactless payment more practical for customers by offering an extended battery life and enhanced security features.
"In the consumer market, we might think people don't tend to see security as a feature or a need they have at the moment, but we think once you start paying for coffee and newspapers people will just assume that security will be there," Bates told TechRadar.
Mcommerce is increasingly being seen as the way of the future for commercial transactions. According to a recent All Things Digital report, "the mcommerce tipping point is now."
