Some experts claim that small businesses have the most to gain from ecommerce. By setting up an impressive website with an online payment gateway, a small company can appear as professional as its larger counterparts. Furthermore, it can access a customer base that spans the globe.

According to a recent survey conducted by the Small Business Authority, however, small businesses are not using ecommerce payment solutions as much as they ought to be.

The survey, which polled approximately 1,200 respondents, found that just 24 percent of small businesses utilize internet payment gateways to process online payments. Approximately 65 percent of respondents indicated that their businesses' websites do not incorporate ecommerce capabilities, while 11 percent said they do not have websites at all.

Barry Sloane, president and CEO of the Small Business Authority, said small businesses should learn from the survey. "Ecommerce is such a major part of the U.S. economy today,” he said. "It’s important that small- to medium-sized business owners use the tools that are available to them to compete with big business."

Online payment gateways enable customers to make payments from anywhere with an internet connection. According to a recent eDigitalResearch study, approximately 50 percent of smartphone owners have used their devices for mobile ecommerce.
