For U.K. ecommerce companies, a new survey may help shed light as to why many shoppers exit a website before completing a purchase through an online payment gateway.
According to a recent study of 2,000 U.K shoppers by Econsultancy, which used the online survey tool Toluna Quick, 48 percent want assurances the site they are visiting is secure and contain Trustmarks. Additionally, 46 percent search for contact details to determine whether the site is safe.
Word-of-mouth remains a popular driver of online shopping in the region. Of those surveyed, 40 percent located a particular site through this method.
After items were added to a checkout shopping cart, nearly 75 percent would abandon their purchase if high delivery charges were included. Also, of the respondents, nearly 71 percent indicated they would abandon a checkout if hidden costs would be added for a purchase completion.
Although there are some deterrents for online shoppers, the ecommerce market is expected to continue its impressive climb. Joanne Bethlamy, director of the internet business solutions group at Cisco, told Practical Ecommerce that by 2015, worldwide ecommerce spending will reach nearly $1.4 trillion.
