The U.K. currently has 7 percent of all power shoppers in their ecommerce market, according to a recent study by FiftyOne Global Ecommerce.

Power shoppers are consumers who spend more for online goods than 90 percent of all other buyers.

"One of the key factors leading to this disparity was power shoppers’ tendency to place larger orders after their initial purchases," said the study. "Merchants’ investments in developing loyalty through positive customer experiences clearly paid off in these cases."

In 2010, these consumers accounted for more than 40 percent of all ecommerce sales and, according to FiftyOne Global, more than half of all transactions in some regions. Globally, two-thirds of power shoppers reside in predominantly English-speaking countries.

Overall, Europe accounts for 26 percent of cross-border power shoppers, which is second to only Canada's 37 percent.

As more U.K. consumers spend through online payment gateways, many high-end retail stores are shutting down. According to a study conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the Local Data Company, 20 shops are closing daily throughout the U.K, due to the increased success of ecommerce.
