With the recent riots in London and other cities across England, some savvy consumers are taking a different approach to defending themselves.

According to a recent report by the ecommerce comparison website ZippyCart, people are using their computers to purchase goods to defend against potential threats, including billy clubs and aluminum bats.

"This bat is perfectly weighted and will suit any UK shop-owner looking to protect their property," said one Amazon reviewer. "Thanks to the ergonomic handle, one easy swing should be enough to shatter patellas, skulls or any other bone on your targeted looter."

Other equipment law-abiding citizens are purchasing through online payment gateways are camping equipment and folding knives, self-defence spray gel and safety matches, the report stated.

Although many people are purchasing self-defence products through ecommerce companies, the industry continues to flourish. According to the recent IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, the U.K. ecommerce industry reached more than £31 billion in the first six months of 2011, which is an increase of 19 percent from the first half of 2010.
