The proposals published recently by the European Commission for a Common European Sales Law received a favourable response from the British Retail Consortium. The legislation would allow online retailers to make sales under a single contract law for all 27 countries in the European Union rather than under different national laws, reducing paperwork.
The common law would also provide customers with a wider selection of goods from online retailers and offer greater consumer protection of their online orders and financial information. Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC, said the consistent regulations and requirements would make it easier for U.K. retailers to expand their consumer base into new markets.
One retailer that is sure to benefit from the new EU law is online fashion retailer Asos.com, which recently won numerous awards at the IMRG ecommerce Awards for Excellence held in London. Asos won four of the 17 awards given, including Best Large Online Retailer and Best Use of Social Media.
The retailer experienced 800 percent year-over-year growth in mobile revenue and recently launched an application for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users to help them locate stores and local drop-off points for their online orders, the news source reported.
