October retail sales increase

The Office for National Statistics recently reported retail sales for U.K. stores increased 0.6 percent in October compared to September, indicating retailers could see high sales figures during the Christmas shopping season.

The ONS reported the rise in sales was driven by the food sector, as rival stores have increased promotions to win over customers. Holiday sales and promotions were also credited with contributing to the increase.

“A robust 0.6 percent increase in retail sales volumes in October indicates that consumer spending started off the fourth quarter much better than expected, thereby providing a significant boost to hopes that the economy can keep growing," stated Howard Archer, chief U.K. and European economist at IHS Global Insight.

To prepare for the Christmas shopping season, and Cyber Monday in particular, PR agency Punch Communications is advising retailers to have an online presence through which they are promoting deals and products well before the actual sale date. If adequate advertising and promotions are not released to the public far enough in advance, many retailers might miss the opportunity to reach new consumers.
