Ofcam's sixth International Communications Market report found the U.K. is a nation full of online shoppers, as more people are accessing online stores for purchases than in other major countries.

Because British consumers pay less for their communication technology than people in other parts of the world, U.K. consumers spend more time online and using their mobile phones for shopping and other activities, the report stated.

The report said 79 percent of people with internet access in the U.K. ordered goods or services online last year, the highest percentage of any European country. British internet users were also more likely to visit online retail stores than shoppers in other countries, as 89 percent of U.K. consumers have made purchases on ecommerce sites in 2011.

The Federation of Small Businesses said more small British retailers would develop ecommerce offerings if broadband across the country were improved. The organisation believes the government should put more money into the broadband infrastructure that could help small retailers grow online, as faster connectivity would encourage more shoppers to embrace ecommerce technology, Broadband Watcher reported.
