Next was the most visited U.K. fashion retailer for Christmas shoppers in 2011, closely followed by John Lewis, M&S, Debenhams and ASOS. Next accounted for 2.17 percent of all online visits to retail sites on Christmas Day.
Fashion United reported that on Christmas Day, 62.8 million U.K. internet visits went to online retail stores, with one in every eight visits online going to an ecommerce site - a new U.K. record. Retail experts say this number could be trumped by figures from Boxing Day and the day after, as many shoppers went online to take advantage of post-Christmas deals or spend online gift cards they received during the holidays.
The source reported mobile shopping also increased this holiday season. Bar code readers enabled shoppers to scan items, compare prices and find the best deals on online stores from their mobile devices. John Lewis increased its sale of online clearance items after Christmas by 119 percent compared with the same time in 2010, largely due to a 46 percent increase in mobile phone purchases.
According to The Guardian, many other retailers reported high sales from mobile devices, as more U.K. consumers are using internet-connected smartphones and tablets. During the Christmas shopping season, an estimated 15 percent of U.K. consumers accessed an online store from a smartphone or tablet. In addition, the source cited IBM figures showing 11 percent of all online sales were made from a mobile device in October, a 3.1 percent increase from October 2010.
