Now that the holidays are over, retailers are calculating their sales numbers from the end of 2011 to see what worked and how they can improve next year. The Waitrose supermarket chain reported very high sales numbers over the Christmas holiday, as customers indulged in luxurious treats for holiday parties and gatherings.
The company experienced a 3.8 percent increase in grocery sales for December 2011 compared with December 2010. Traditional turkey orders increased 66 percent compared with last year, while dressed lobster sales nearly tripled and Christmas pudding purchases grew 53 percent.
The source reported that one factor greatly boosting the chain's sales was the transition to online shopping. Waitrose found online shopping was the most popular option for customers in the week leading up to Christmas 2011, as web sales increased 49 percent compared with December 2010 figures.
Next also discovered its online store produced the highest sales figures among its retail platforms last month. The clothing retailer reported its online Next Directory produced a 16.9 percent year-over-year increase in revenues.
