Tesco recently launched its online store in Prague to extend its consumer reach, marking the retailer's first online presence in Central Europe.

The online store allows Czech customers to browse and purchase more than 20,000 lines of food and groceries, as well as nonfood items such as toys and accessories. Tesco is working towards becoming a dominant multichannel channel retailer in the international market through an online platform that can be used in multiple countries.

"We've used our learning and experiences from our existing online operations in the U.K., Ireland and South Korea to create an innovative IT platform that is industry leading and scalable," said Ken Towle, director of internet retailing at Tesco.

Three of the supermarket's Prague stores will service online orders initially, though an expansion of the service is planned.

"By taking our great in-store shopping trip online, we can offer our customers a quick and easy way to shop and help them in their busy lives," said Tesco Czech Republic CEO Phil Clarke.

According to its website, Tesco currently operates 2,715 U.K. stores and 5,380 stores worldwide. In addition to its stores in the Czech Republic, the company has stores in the Central European countries of Poland, Hungary and Slovakia.
