The retail sector of the Scottish mutual trading company the Co-operative Group reported strong sales during the Christmas season, with sales in the four weeks leading up to December 31 up 3.1 percent from the year before.
The retailer's online store experienced its best holiday season ever, with an increase of 18.4 percent in sales for the four weeks compared with the same time in 2010.
"Against the backdrop of financial pressures on household budgets our focus on quality and value and the fact that our food stores are located within communities struck a chord with customers," said Peter Marks, CEO of the group.
The group plans to continue to grow its brand and extend its consumer base by opening 300 more stores over the next three years and enhancing its online offerings.
The group has already started that expansion after acquiring the Scottish convenience store retailer David Sands and its 28 branches spread out across the Fife, Kinross and Perthshire regions.
