Home delivery specialist Hermes recently reported parcel volumes during the Christmas holiday season increased 40 percent, mostly due to the drastic rise in online shoppers throughout the U.K. in 2011.
In December, Hermes delivered nearly 15 million items from high street, online and catalogue retailers to customers in the U.K., marking a 40 percent increase from December 2010. The courier service's busiest day of the month was December 1, when 710,000 parcels were handled, a 30 percent increase in volume compared with the peak day in 2010. Throughout the month, Hermes experienced 16 record days of deliveries, delivering more than 600,000 items on eight different days.
"With internet sales breaking all records this Christmas we have increased demand for our flexible, high-quality home delivery solutions," said Jon Tobbell, commercial director for Hermes U.K.
According to Post and Parcel, Hermes is planning to expand its operations in light of the increased parcel volume. In 2011, Hermes sales increased 6 percent, and the company predicts this number will continue to increase through 2012, boosted by several new clients. Some of Hermes' top current clients are Next Directory, Readers Digest, ASOS and Lakeland.
