The New Online Trends 2011 report from the Centre for Retail Research found online retail sales in the U.K. grew by 14 percent in 2011 to more than £50 billion, accounting for 12 percent of total retail sales. In 2012, the report predicts the ecommerce industry in the U.K. will grow another 14 percent.
One factor contributing to the growth of online retail is an increase in internet traffic, Intel's CEO Paul Otellini said. As more retailers are turning to online stores, the job market for IT professionals is booming, making it one of the strongest employment sectors in the U.K., Target Jobs reported.
Similarly, the online grocery store market is also expected to see significant growth in 2012. According to Global Industry Analysts, more grocery retailers are turning to the internet to boost sales and increase their consumer base all over the world. The most drastic growth in online grocery retailing has been reported in the United States, the U.K. and France. The majority of these international grocers are offering full-range services to customers searching online stores for food items. GIA predicts emerging markets in Latin America and Asia will begin to see significant expansion of online grocery options in the near term.
