ParcelsPlease delivery service predicts package volume in 2012 will continue to grow due to an increased number of international parcels being delivered to Australia, Greece and France as more shoppers are finding deals online from U.K. retailers.
According to ParcelsPlease, the number of parcels being sent from the U.K. to Australia increased 31 percent during the recent holiday season, while the number sent to Greece increased 21 percent and there was a 19 percent increase in parcels shipped to France.
"We believe that cheap parcel delivery services are the backbone to the ecommerce industry, and while these numbers are great, we believe that with the increasing popularity of online shopping and smartphones, that the online industry will get a lot more orders this year, and as a result, delivery companies like ParcelsPlease will see a dramatic increase in the amount of parcels that they need to deliver," said a ParcelsPlease spokesperson.
U.K. shoppers aren't just turning to ecommerce options to ship products overseas; they are increasingly shopping online for household goods, including groceries. Ocado recently announced it will cut its prices on a large variety of products in an effort to outdo the online offerings from competing online grocery stores. Ocado expects to lower prices by at least 10 percent on more than 600 items from its online store, encouraging shoppers to purchase from its site over Tesco Direct or other competitors, Retail Week reported.
